Our Stories

We All Deserve a Life Free from Tobacco

We all have unique reasons for seeking a tobacco-free life—protecting our loved ones, improving our health, or simply finding freedom from old habits. By sharing our stories, we remind each other that quitting is possible and no one has to do it alone.

Herminia Acevedo:
Community Member – Took the First Step

I started smoking when I was 12 because it was what I saw at home. My parents smoked, and I wanted to feel part of the family. For years, I smoked a pack a day — from the moment I had my morning coffee to late at night. After 41 years, my health got worse, and my doctors warned me I could go blind if I didn’t stop. What finally pushed me to quit was my granddaughter. She showed me a photo of lungs and said she wanted me at her graduation. That moment changed everything. I used a patch and quit in three days. I haven’t smoked since.
